Drag up c again to hide them!

Actually there are a lot more special characters available on MessagEase. See the next section for more details.

In Settings you can choose how these special characters will be shown or hidden. You can choose between Drag Toggle, the default, showing or hiding the special characters with a drag-up starting from the space-bar. Or, you can select Off on Letter with which you can show the special characters with a drag up from the space-bar, but will hide these special characters when you enter a letter. Or you can set the special characters to be always showing or always hidden.
